Skateboarding on the enormous half pipe ramps, like you see in
competitions is know as "vert". The name is short for
"vertical"
- riding skateboard's on vertical walls. This is something
you
don't get to do on mini ramps and in most skate parks! Riding
vert ramps takes some getting used to.
You'll want to start learning tricks once you feel comfortable on the
ramp. First, you want to learn to fall the right way. To do
this,
run up the side of the ramp, jump, and land on your knee pads and slide
down the ramp to the middle. Do this many times,
and get
used to it. Don't get in the habit of catching yourself with
your
hands. Roll onto your knees. But whatever
happens,
just relax and let gravity take you down to the middle of the ramp.
Make sure you wear protective gear! Knee pads can be
restrictive
but are a must for vert or half pipes unless you want to break your
knee caps. Wrist guards are always good, you'll be glad you
were
wearing them when you take a fall.
Get a feel for riding on the ramp so you know what to expect once
you're in there. Make your way to the top of the
ramp.
Place the tail of the skateboard on the metal lip of the
ramp.
Put your back foot on the tail to hold the skateboard in
place.
Now with one fluid motion put your front foot on and stomp the board
down till it contacts the ramp. Stay centered over the board
and
go with the motion.
For tips on how to do moves, you can always watch a move in a
skateboarding video in slow motion and carefully watch the foot action.
Sequence photos are another excellent way to learn.
Don't
get discouraged because you can't land a trick the first try.
Just practice, have fun and you will learn the trick eventually. |
