KAYAKING Kayak- assorted |
By Learnzat.com Plastic kayaks are sturdy and affordable. This is probably your best choice if you're just looking for a recreational kayak. There are two basic kinds of plastic kayaks. There are blow-molded and roto-molded kayaks. These kayaks are designed to be a little sturdier than other types. If you want a longer lasting type, you should go with a blow-molded model. Roto-molded kayaks usually end up lighter and more flexible, so they are better for whitewater touring rather than the blow-molded models. Comfort is the chief feature you should take into consideration when you buy a new kayak. You should also consider whether or not it will be easy for you to get into the cockpit. Large people should make sure that the kind they are purchasing has a lot of space for them to get in; you don't want to find out that you can't easily get in and out of it when you're already at the shore. If at all feasible, you should see if you can at least try getting into the kayak before you buy it. Try and find a retailer that will let you try out the kayak before you commit to buying it. Practice getting out of the kayak on land. One of the things that make getting out of the kayak in other situations harder is that the kayak itself will move while you are trying to get out. You should make sure that you never stand up in your kayak unless it is definitely on the shore, otherwise, you might tip it, which could result in you getting injured - or at least falling into the water and getting soaked. The wet exit (getting out of the boat in the water) is not very hard, but it is still important to have a little experience with it. It would be wise for you to practice this method before you actually go kayaking. (Although, it's not necessary if you intend on using a sit-on-top kayak). If so, you'll just be able to flip the kayak back over and get back in. The best place to practice the wet exit is in a swimming pool, or other shallow water. Once you are underwater, wait until you get stabilized. Next, you should find the release strap on the kayak, and pull it. Once you do, you should be able to lean forward, straighten your legs, and push yourself out of the kayak. Trunk rotation is the most essential part of being able to paddle a kayak. Trunk rotation is the way you move your torso when you are paddling a kayak. This allows you to make stronger, larger strokes with your paddle, so that you won't have any trouble making sure that you are actually moving nicely with each stroke. One way that you can measure whether or not enough of your power is coming from your trunk rotation rather than your arms is to pay close attention to what your arms do when you paddle. If your arms are mostly straight while you paddle, then that most likely means that you are using trunk rotation to propel the kayak through the water. When you're planning on launching from a beach, make sure that you check the surf conditions. If the surf is too high, it might overturn your boat. The lower the surf, the easier it is to get out to sea. You might also want to check around the area to make sure that there are no rocks in your way. Make sure that you pull the kayak off the beach enough so that the bow is already floating to insure that it will be able to slide into the water once you are inside. Push off from the beach using your paddles, and you're ready to kayak! |
