What is fly fishing? For a lot of people, fishing is just fishing.  Basically, fly fishing is one of the fastest growing sports.  It is an old method of angling primarily developed to catch trout and salmon. Today, it is also used to catch bass, carp, pike and a wide range of saltwater fish. The rods are lightweight and long. The line provides the casting weight and is supposed to be heavy.  In fly fishing, the weight of the line propels it forward and puts your fly into place. The intent in fly fishing is to extend the fly gently and to always be in control of it.

If you are a just learning, buy a basic, mid priced rod, or borrow one before making a big investment.  You will want to get a vest, it is one of the most important pieces of equipment since you need to have your gear with you while wading and casting.

Fly fishing is very easy when three things are right: you must have a suitable rod; you must get a line to match it; and you must learn correct casting technique.

Fly fishing uses an artificial fly as bait, which is tied to a hook with the use of thread, feathers, and other similar materials. The idea is to attract the fish by fooling them into thinking these materials are food.  Many consider tying a knot as a simple task; but actually, this can either give you a lot of frustration or satisfaction. Keep in mind that tying your fly fishing knots incorrectly will either foul you up on the riverbank or the other way around - you can land a big one.

Also, make sure to clean your equipment after each fishing trip to keep it in good shape and prevent corrosion.
