So you want to be in pictures?

You've been bitten by the acting bug, and there seems to be no cure. Nothing else matters to you other than seeing your name in lights or making it onto a hit TV show.

This profession takes demonstrating the fullest expression of yourself; overcoming whatever barriers you might have.  Some of us have more barriers to overcome than others such as fear, censorship, judgment, lack of self-confidence,  fear of losing control, and of looking silly.

The fear of looking silly is interesting, especially with actors, who by definition, want to attract attention and "live fully" in front of an audience. Part of the thrill of it is to communicate and let the audience live vicariously through the actor's performance and yet some actors have a fear of looking silly. That certainly is one of the self-imposed barriers you see repeatedly in people during improvisational training.

Looking foolish in public seems to be something most people avoid at all costs. Yet at the same time, we adore and shell out great amounts of money to performers who are "outrageous,"  "over-the-top," and famous exactly because they are willing to go where most won't and we love to live vicariously through them.

Improvisational practice helps break down barriers to the expression of your creativity. We are all creative and creativity already resides within us. Some people have easier access to it and others have to work at it but that creativity is there.

Part of improvisational training is about freeing yourself from judgment. Actors, who judge themselves frequently, will often shut down and give up.  Don't judge or be critical of what you did…diagnose. Look at the scene from a distance. Ask yourself what got in the way, so you don't repeat it the next time.

Do as much live performing as you can to discover how your character elements come across to others.  From even the smallest exercise in class to a paid performance, you'll discover things about your acting that you'll get in no other place. Nothing is better than feedback.
