Acrylic nails are called several different names, with the nail technician's least favorite being "fake".
The most commonly applied enhancement is traditional acrylic, which is a two-part system of liquid and powder.

Gel acrylic is a one-part system consisting of the application of a  thick gel.  It is normally 'cured' under a UV light.  Do not mistake gel with traditional acrylic. The two products are actually acrylic but they apply and wear differently.  Gel nails are actually acrylic; they are made from the same class of acrylates, but with different molecular structures, appearance, application procedures and different curing methods.

Many technicians suggest that acrylic nails should be cared for as if they were natural.  It is a good idea to avoid exposing them to water for an extended period of time. The water can get in between the acrylic and the natural nail, causing damage and possible infection. Wearing rubber gloves when washing dishes is recommended, but aside from that, artificial wearers can go about their usual routines without worry, especially if the nails are applied using quality materials.

In addition to color, many people choose to add embellishments.  Nail artists offer inserts that are imbedded right into the acrylic. Some more flashy choices include miniature gems and stickers that come in a wide range of shapes, designs and colors. A very popular current trend is nail piercing. A technician pierces the nail with a piece of jewelry. Doing this on natural nails is virtually impossible so you can see that acrylics offer great flexibility.

A very popular, cheap and effective way of removing the acrylic nails is to use acetone. You need to buy pure acetone, which is easily available from any shop that sells regular nail polish remover. The nails should then be trimmed as far as possible.  To remove the nails, soak your hands in warm water for some time. Then soak them in acetone and the acrylic nails will then become soft and remove easily .  A wood pusher can help scrape the excess acrylic off.  Make sure to massage the hands with a good hand cream as the acetone can dry the skin.

A typical nail application  takes about an hour. Maintaining them at the salon usually take about 15 minutes.
